Skillz Exchange

The Ripe-n-Juicy Bubble Camp and Philosopher's Stone are collaborating to offer a Skills Exchange in the Elyssian Fields again this year. Last year the volunteer teachers who collaborated taught poi, staff, hooping, capoeria, tribal dance, theater makeup and lots more. We had classes on Fri, Sat and Sun. Let's do that again! (This will be the third year in a row.)

This is a call for Teachers! We will have a dry-erase board on site where classes and times and teachers will be listed but I'd like to start organizing now. I can teach either hoop or poi or perhaps some kind of dance. I thought I'd see what others offer to teach since before figuring out where I might best serve.

Everyone has something to teach. Please don't be shy about volunteering. Even a little knowledge about something is more than many of us already have. This is a really low-key, non-competitive place to share information openly, make friends and build community. But we need your help! Believe me, people want to learn what you know. Please share!

What could you teach and when would you prefer to teach it?

FYI: I didn't say this before but the reason we created the Chill Spin Zone was for those folks who felt a little daunted by what they viewed as "the competitive nature" of the burn a couple of years ago. It wasn't really like that last year and the Chill Spin Zone came to serve another purpose -- as a place to learn new things and share what you know. Last year we had about 20 workshops. We're still looking for people who would love to share their passion. Please drop a note here or drop me an email if you're interested in helping.

      Unsolicited testimonial:
I popped over last year for a few things and let me tell you - as a total spin/hoop novice, there was no competition, no judgment, no stress. It was fun and informative and clearly embraced the principle of inclusion. The only person making fun of me was me and that negativity, although fairly lighthearted, was discouraged and overshadowed by support from the organizers/instructors.

I'm looking forward to coming again this year. Thank you, Caroleeena and crew!

    Caroleeena my love,
Can you put me on the board for my stamp carving, book making, and letterboxing skill sharezzzz? It'll be 1/2 hour of stamp carving, 1/2 hour of book making, and letterboxing info througout. At teh end of class everyone will walk away with a hard carved stamp, a homemade book, and clues to find the various hidden art at Mysteria.

    They will be held:

    Friday: 11am
    Saturday: noonish
    Sunday: after brunch at IHOP

People will have to meet me at Maybe Bacon Camp, and then follow me on to our yet to be determined class site.

I'll be the sweaty one, covered in bacon grease.

Thanks, love!!!! Can't wait to see you. Hope I get to take one of your hooping classes!!!

What great classes! We'll have a dry-erase board at the Chill Spin Zone. I'll list your classes on there and if you need to make changes, you can make them on there too.

I plan to teach a hoopdance workshop. I think I'll teach a bit of basic hooping (half hour) but then I'd like to concentrate on traveling steps, movement and dance for half an hour. I'm thinking of doing this at 11:00 am on Saturday, prior to the Live Modeling at Bubble Camp.

I can teach a basic poi spinning workshop too if no one signs up or perhaps integrating dance into your poi dance. I would want to do this on Friday probably, I'm guessing around 4-ish. I'll see where we could use someone once we have all our other volunteers arranged.

hello there! I feel bad and/or confused because I totally missed my class last year. I showed up at the right time (or at least I thought it was, I probably missed something with the timing) and nobody was around. So either way, I'm down to do some teaching this time, and hopefully I won't mess it up! :) I just taught a class on poi hybrids, tosses, and stalls at the PEX festival and it seemed to go over well. I still have plenty of handouts left, so if there is interest in that, I'm certainly down to give it a whirl. Or an intermediate poi class to cover things like crossers, isolations, antispins, etc. Or maybe some beginner or intermediate double staves?

I am so glad you're coming! I can tell you what happened last year. I thought you had to cancel so I didn't write you on the board. I'm so sorry. I don't know why I thought that. Why did I think that!?! Free bubbly for you!!!!

We're going to have a dry-erase board outside Bubble Camp. I'll post folks on it and you just choose a time when you want to teach. (I'm going to start a tentative schedule here in a minute.) When you arrive, just start doing your thing and I promise people will come. Last year, every time, I was like, "Nobody's here..." then, if I just started hooping or poi spinning, they would come. It's like Field of Dreams that way.

Bubble Camp is definitely in the Elyssian Fields, near the bridge that goes to the little acoustic stage though I think the Chill Spin Zone might be closer to the other bridge. We'll see how things come together once we see the property. Please drop by for a glass of bubbly and we'll get our dry-erase board started.

I'm so grateful to all the teachers and participants!!! This wouldn't happen without you. I meet so many nice people and learn so much every year. I'm thrilled to see this coming together.

AliCat wants she and I to teach a tandem (or partner) hooping workshop. I only have 3, maybe 4, hoops big enough for partner hooping so if anyone else has one, please bring it. If you don't have a partner, we'll hook you up with one. The only prerequisite is that it helps if you're about the same height. And you can't be shy. It's kinda like slow dancing in high school ... except without the boners.

I can't wait to see you all on the mountain. And Cway I have an extra special hug for you.I'm so sorry about last year! (I have extra sock poi if you need some.)

Greetings, ali cat here....I suppose I was more talking about hooping with multiple hoops (creating the box and star shapes, etc....).
We should definitely practice partner hooping, but guess I didn't mean two people in one hoop....i definitely can't bring any big hoops on the plane ;)

Oh, I misunderstood. I'm more interested in teaching hooping hooping I think. That stuff is interesting but more limited to large groups, etc. I also find it hard to remember and I'm not sure I can really recall much of it, let alone teach it. Let's figure something else out to teach. I think I'd like to teach something that increases individual skills since more people will be able to use that.

Also, if you're up, could you write or call me? I need help figuring out a square footage question. I'm trying to accomodate your friends. but I can't figure this footage out for the life of me. It's so frustrating!!!

I'd be up for teaching Devil Sticks (beginner or intermediate level). I don't know if anyone is interested, but they're an often under represented toy and I'll be around with 2 extra pair. I don't know what particular time would be best for me, but I'll be around all weekend. Sometime Friday or Saturday afternoon would be best.

I would like to learn how to fly a helicopter, but I can't seem to find anyone skilled who is willing to teach me. Maybe some lovely Mysterian will bring a spare helicopter I can practice with. I promise I will fly really low over the lower lake and practice landing on the floating bar.

On a much more hoopy note, I am looking forward to hooping it up with Caroleeena!! YAY hoopsters. Can't wait to learn new skillz. :) Thanks for sharing, and caring, and loving, and dancing, and HOOOOOPING.

This sounds great, I will check with my partner and see if we can do a Contact Juggling workshop/ jam. and what time... if you need anything like that.

That would be awesome! I'll bring my contact juggling ball too.

See you on the mountain. I am heading there now!
      • ya - Ribbons the Friendly Viking would love to teach a CJ workshop and a toss workshop also. He started the Kansas University- Juggling club a long time ago and is a professional teacher - of other stuff... but makes a great juggling instructor.

he said he would put a time down when he gets there and sees what the schedule looks like! (he's not on tribe so i'm speakin for him here. :) )

I just learned how to make kudzu baskets... its not exactly a circus skill - but with all this kudzu... we could go grab some and make some baskets for all your toys... if anyone would be interested in it. I'm in no way any expert... but its really free form and super easy once you get a couple of basics. But I can also help out with the CJ workshop / jam if this type of skill doesn't fit with the theme your working on... :)

Can NOT WAIT! to get to Transformus. (just spent the last several hours baking berry goods, and cutting bamboo- for Bambooberry RFD - Shangri- la. :) - shameless plug for our own camp... :) )

        see ya soon!
        1 luv, t.
